The acclaimed Chicago-based chamber music ensemble returns to the MCA Stage for two concerts presented with the MCA exhibition, the language of less (then and now) that feature contemporary visual art with themes of minimalism. Both concerts feature music by esteemed older composers as well as talented younger composers.
Inspired by the quiet, thoughtful simplicity of minimalist visual art, eighth blackbird explores what “less” can mean when translated to music. The stark, otherworldly landscapes of Lucier’s Fidelio Trio and Feldman’s Durations I act as analogues to the vast color-field canvases of Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko. Calm, beautiful works by New York composers Timo Andres and Caleb Burhans contrast with the unremitting, mesmerizing repetitions of Philip Glass’s Music in Similar Motion and Lang’s fast, funky and obsessive composition, these broken wings.
