San Francisco Community Music Center

India Cooke on violin, and Miya Masaoka on koto. With the unusual
instrumentation of alto saxophone and hammer dulcimer, trancepatterns

free jazz, minimalism, Indian raga and Middle Eastern modalities, this
music combines driving rhythm with complex patterns and improvisation.
Unlike anything heard before, this music is entrancing and complex.

Holland Hopson: soprano saxophone, sipsi & electronics
John J.A. Jannone: dataglove, dataviolin, bass guitar, electronics
Kurt Ralske: interactive digital video
Lukasz Lysakowski: interactive digital video
SOFT BOOT, the multimedia quartet of Holland Hopson (soprano saxophone,
electronics), John Jannone (dataglove, dataviolin, electronics), Kurt
Ralske (interactive digital video), and Lukasz Lysakowski (interactive
digital video) will be performing two evenings of interactive electronic
music and video at the Medicine Show Theater, located at 549 West 52nd
Street (between 10th & 11th) in New York City, on April 20th and 21st,
2001 at 7:30 PM. Admission will be $10.
Members of SOFT BOOT have been performing together in duets and trios
since 1996.ð This event will mark their first appearance as a quartet. In
March of 2000, Jannone, Hopson and Ralske performed to a packed house at
the Medicine Show Theater as part of the multimedia quintet PENTET.0+55.
Lukasz Lysakowski and Kurt Ralske both perform with custom-designed
digital video systems for the non-linear, real-time composition of visual
elements. They will be using their systems as visual instruments,
creating visual and sonic agreements, conversations, duets and solos
throughout the evening, projected on a large video screen. At the core of
Ralske's video system is the acclaimed NATO.0+55 software designed by the
controversial artist/activist Netochka Nezvanova. Lysakowski's system is
based on Image/ine, a real-time image manipulation system developed at
the Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music (STEIM) in The Netherlands.
John J.A. Jannone has developed an electronically expanded performance
technique in which the sounds of his collaborators become the raw
material for a cybernetic instrument. Jannone's custom built dataglove
and dataviolin are the virtual instrument in which sounds are
simultaneously captured, layered, transposed and re-performed.
Holland Hopson plays a saxophone extended with electronic sensors.
Holland's custom machine listening software enables his computer to
listen to his playing and respond to it with real-time signal processing,
samples, and synthesized sounds.
These four artists will perform in various combinations throughout theevening, developing sonic and visual dialogues ranging from ambient to
aggressive, from lush to stark.

Hugh Livingston presents his work based on Xu Bing's Book from Sky
8pm Saturday April 28 at
New Langton Arts on
1246 Folsom Street San Francisco, CA 94103.
http://www.newlangtonarts.org/the/the_intro.html.
Chinese artist and Macarthur Award-winner Xu Bing's Book from Sky
(Tian Shu) is many volumes written in an imaginary language that he
developed based on the components of Chinese. There are 4000
ideograms which have no meaning and are unpronounceable. Hugh
Livingston has envisioned the language as being readable as musical
notation, and each ideogram has been assigned a cello sound. This
first San Francisco presentation will be the world premiere of a new
section, the pronunciation dictionary, which contains 627 characters.
The nine pages will be hung from the ceiling, enlarged as if a giant
celestial book.
Advance reservations are strongly recommended. My last two shows this
spring were standing room only. A discussion and reception will
follow. Pages of the 'dictionary' section of Book from Sky will be on
display. Read more about the unusual work with text by Xu Bing at
http://www.xbstudio.org/.

Loren Chasseôs synthesis of neglected places are creation of a dioramic
miniature landscape that uses its materials as instruments while
simultaneously attempting to activate the inherent ambience of the
performance space.
Koji Asano's powerful but sensitive music is created by using a laptop computer and
microphone as instruments. By changing the position of the microphones, Asano
is able to amplify the movement of sound waves. This electroacoustic-musicis
distinguished by its lack of constraint and free style. He has released
20titles of CD that are so wide-ranged from Computers, Solo Piano, Guitar
Bands,Experimental electronics to Strings, his group Koji Asano Ensemble in
Tokyo.

Loren Chasse is an instructor for the San Francisco School District where he
has been leading 'listening' hikes for afterschool programs during the past
four years. Through these events, Chasse has been documenting the sonic
activities and the imaginative listening of children. He also records and
performs both as solo artist and with the groups idBattery and Thuja.
Chasse's approach toward sound is to activate areas of a landscape and the
objects in them as "instruments"; Loren Chasse received his M.A. from the
University of Pennsylvania and is currently completing the Teaching
Credential program at San Francisco State.
Koji Asano is creating anoriginal world of music through his use of various
instruments. This electroacoustic-music is distinguished by its lack of
constraint and freestyle. 20 titles of CD works are so wide-ranged from
Computers, Solo Piano, GuitarBands, Experimental electronics to Strings, his

Subversive Feminist Verse: Last Chance to catch "OYL" at the 45 Bleecker Theater
Banshee Productions -49 Bleecker St. 4th Fl. NY, NY 10012, (914) 582-8417
OYL SLIDES INTO THE LATE NIGHT SLOT AT 45 BLEECKER
Who: Banshee Productions - a theatre company devoted solely to producing
"contemporary works by hep chicks." Artistic Director/Producer Emily Rems.
What: OYL a play about Popeye's lanky paramour adapted by Emily Rems from
the controversial book of poetry by Denise Duhamel and Maureen Seaton.
Where: The Culture Project @ 45 Bleecker (corner of Lafayette) NYC.
Subway - 6 to Bleecker, BDFQ to Broadway/Lafayette, NR to Prince.
When: March 30 - April 27, 2001. Friday nights at 10:30 PM.
Why: Because April is National Poetry Month. What better way to celebrate
than with a Greek Chorus of 10 Olive Oyls intoning subversive feminist verse?
How: Tickets are $10 (cheap!) and can be purchased with cash only at the
door on the evening of the performance. For reservations, information, and to
arrange complimentary press tickets, call the OYL Hotline (914) 582-8417.
The Play- Olive Oyl has much more to say than "Help Popeye, help!" Luckily,
poets Denise Duhamel (Winner of the 1999 Crab Orchard Poetry Prize) and
Maureen Seaton (Winner of The Pushcart Prize, The Iowa Poetry Prize, the
Lambda Literary Award and the Eighth Mountain Poetry Prize) have given the
comic book heroine a new voice and have exposed the sexy little secrets and
butchy savoir faire that are really behind Olive Oyl's remarkable staying
power. Her various incarnations throughout history, her turbulent love
triangle between Popeye and Bluto and her true yearnings for women and
oversized boots are but a few of the revelations brought to life by the
astonishingly surreal cast in this one-act-wonder.
Who's Who - The ensemble of 10 Olive Oyls, comprised of both men and women,
includes: Lila Fenton, Cornelia Lorentzen, Jeanette Rivera, Caprice Royal,
Lila Donnolo, Daniel Barcelowsky, Emily Skelton, Michael Cavazos, Will
Harrell and Claudia Alick and features the improvisational song stylings of
"Jazz-Diva-D-Luxe," Anya Singleton. OYL was Directed, Adapted, Produced and
Designed by Emily Rems, Assoc Produced by Alpha Wong and Stage Managed by
Joan Tuohy. Costumes constructed by Claudia Alick and Jeanette Rivera with
Wig Mastery deftly executed by Will Harrell. Production photography provided
by Barnaby Draper and web site design donated by Johanna Bates.

Magnetics: an exhibition featuring work by Katrin Grotepass, Golan Levin
Opening reception Thursday, April 5, 2000 6-9. Magnetics: an exhibition focused on the physical and virtual
communications expressed through magnetic forces.
Katrin Grotepass and Golan Levin reach to the opposite ends of the
spectrum to relate the same principles in the explorations of Magnetism
as a communicative medium.
At Moving Image Gallery
414 Broadway 3 Fl
NY, NY 10013
For more information, check out http://www.movingimagegallery.com or phone: 212.966.4741.
Katrin Grotepass:
¾My work is showing the mysterious interaction of + and - of magnetic
energy. This invisible energy is made visible though physical mediums
using magnetic, iron-filings, fluorescent light and paper.
The energy of the creation of the work is a swell, and the catalyst for
my ink, graphite drawings. - Ink is the free flowing energy following the gravity in its organic
shape. - Graphite is compressed energy in its geometrical form seen in the
rhythm Pencil stroke. Both elements are set in a dialogue. The graphite element seems to create
a base for the ink element to fly."
Golan Levin:
"My work has focused on the design of real-time environments, which allow
people to explore abstract form, color and sound in ways that are direct,
engaging, and expressive. Such environments inevitably investigate an
interplay of natural and synthetic forces."
'Floo' disperses and deflects soft-edged tendrils in response to the
interactant's movements, according to the patterns of magnetic fields.
'Flocculus' is a New Latin term for hairball. In this environment,
ductile hairs drawn by the user swirl around a shifting, imaginary drain.
'Snoog Series' is a set of static/interactive computational forms
intended as raw materials for phonaesthetic inquiry.
